Overview of 28 days Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trekking

Kanchenjunga Base Camp trekking represents a series of natural diversity in east Nepal. Nepal’s far eastern territory borders India for about 150 kilometers. The Nepalese side of the landmass has differentiated into three geographical characteristics.

Herein, the lower belt includes the flat plains of Terai, enclosed by three districts: Sunsari, Morang, and Jhapa. Furthermore, The middle landmass includes dense tropical forests surrounding hills that range up to 3000 meters. Taplejung, Panchthar, and Terhathum are the hilly districts in the Kanchenjunga area. The uppermost section of this geology includes the mighty Himalayan belt encapsulating towering mountains.

One such Himalayan wonder is Mt.Kanchenjunga, which stands 8586 meters high from the Sea level and is the third-highest peak in the world. This mountain scales as the second-highest peak in Nepal after Mt.Everest (8848.86 m). The British expedition team was the first to climb Mt.Kanchenjunga in 1955. Joe Brown and George Band were the first to summit this mountain.

The mountainous area surrounding this massif is filled with glacial moraines, rocky peaks, and glacial lakes. Mt.Kanchenjunga stands tall amongst numerous neighbors like Wedge Peak(6802m), Kabru I(7412m), Kumbhakarna(7711m), Taple Sikhar(6510m) and others. These mountains are part of the Great Himalayan range and stand proudly in eastern Nepal.

Also, the area uncovered by these massifs, including the dense forests and the hilly regions, is part of the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area. Owing to its rich biodiversity and flaming geological amusement, this conservation area was established in 1997, covering an area of 2035 square kilometers.

A trekking trail pierces via the high hills of the south, traversing through the rugged glacial terrain of Kanchenjunga massifs. This is what we call the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trekking. Unlike your commercial, the Kanchenjunga trek takes the remote space, which is isolated and uncharted.

The trekking to Kanchenjunga is full of untouched land masses that provide surreal views of the encircling peaks. Note that the spaces your trek leads to will have three vegetation types: climate, ambiance, culture, and experience.

Your starting point of the trek is at Suketar, an altitude of 2421 meters. From here, we pass through the rural hilly landscape to the mountainous terrain of the north. We reach the highest point of the Kanchenjunga trek at Pangpema at an elevation of 5388 meters.

Upon your return from Base Camp, you will end your trek at Birtamod, the lowest altitude landmass of this trek at 300 meters. Just imagine the diversity of people, geography, atmosphere, flora and fauna, and communities you would discover on this fantastic trek.

People and Culture of the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trekking

People and culture spread across the Kanchenjunga region portray various enriches. This area, uncovered by the Kanchenjunga region, is home to the Sherpa, Rai, and Limbu groups of people. You will encounter several amusing traditions and cultural practices during the Kanchenjunga trekking.

Rais and Limbus particularly celebrate Sakela Udhauli (October/November), Sakela Ubhauli(April/May), Sakewa(April/May), Yele Dhung(Jan/Feb) and others. Traveling during these dates puts you in for a celebration vibe. Additionally, since the teahouses you will be staying at are run by the locals, you will have complete immersion in their walk of life.

Cost of Kanchenjunga Trek

Kanchenjunga trek Cost depends on facilities. The net cost of the package is dependent on three main factors:

1) Lodging in Kathmandu

During your trekking day 25, your accommodation will be in similar teahouses. These mountain lodges provide limited facilities and modern amenities. That being said, in Kathmandu, there are ranges of hotels available based on your budget and preferences. If you choose a high-end luxurious accommodation, it can cost more and vice versa.

2) Number of pax

The trekking expenses, permits, flight costs, and accommodation during the trek is constant. However, domestic transfers, guide, and porter costs decrease if you have more people. So, the number of people in your trekking group also determines the price of trekking at Kanchenjunga Base Camp.

3) Travelling Time

Generally, higher demand hikes the cost of any service or product. There are multiple factors at play here. There are many tourists and trekkers during the best time for the Kanchenjunga trek: Autumn and Spring. The overall cost of accommodation and transportation spikes during these months. If you plan for trekking during these times, the cost of your trek will be higher. Alternatively, the price will be relatively low if you plan your tour during the low season (Winter and Summer).

Duration of the trek

The standard duration of the trek is 28 days. This typical itinerary includes an additional tour of Yalung Base Camp. We can custom-create your itinerary based on your requirements. The duration of the Kanchenjunga Base Camp trek is based on how comfortable the trekking experience is.

If you want to trek for only 4-5 hours a day, a similar itinerary can be designed by lengthening the overall duration of the trek. Furthermore, we can shorten the time if you can trek for more than the planned timeline.

Difficulty of the Kanchenjunga Trek

Kanchenjunga trek difficulty is based on an individual’s physique and endurance capacity. This traverse takes on the rugged terrain of Kanchenjunga highlands. Owing to the switchback ascents, high altitude, rural landscape, and remoteness of the area, it is a demanding trek. The area surrounding Kanchenjunga massifs is filled with glacial moraine, icy pathways, and uneven tracks. It commands the proper mental and physical conditions of the trekkers.

Kanchenjunga trekking is not recommended for beginners. This trekking requires you to stay at higher altitudes (above 4000 meters) for five days (Day 12- Day 15). We strictly recommend that you consult your doctor for proper recommendations. Also, we suggest you create a good fitness and endurance training regimen one month before your trekking dates. Your training provides a comfortable trekking experience without medical issues in between.

Accommodation and Meals (Both Camping and Teahouse are available)

Kanchenjunga Trekking Accommodation in the past was in a camping tent. A ground crew team would be assigned to carry camping equipment and set up your campsite. This would lengthen the trekking duration, but the camping trek is another experience to savor. Currently, teahouses are established along the trail to your final stopover, Pang Pema.

Teahouses are wooden houses built by the inhabitants for your lodging requirements. These accommodation alternatives are basic. You will be provided with a foam mattress, quilt, and pillow in the room that usually accommodates 2 to 6 individuals. Wifi and Hot showers are subject to availability depending on the place.

You have multiple meal options to choose from for meals in Kanchenjunga Trekking. Since this is teahouse trekking, a cook will be available at every stop. The food option ranges from Indian, Nepalese, and Tibetan dishes. “Dal Bhaat” is a Nepalese regular meal most preferred during the Trek. It includes a portion each of rice, lentil soup, veg curry, and pickle.

Furthermore, This dish is nutritious and is filling for your tummy. During the Trek, it is paramount to be in utmost health conditions. We don’t recommend eating meat products or canned meat during your trekking. Pastas, Mashed Potatoes, French Fries, Noodles, and Soup are available in most teahouses. The breakfast menu includes Tibetan bread, Noodles, Pancakes, oatmeal, and others. If you have particular meal preferences, it is advised to inform us in advance.

You can choose a teahouse trekking or camp trekking for the Kanchenjunga trek. Boundless Adventures can arrange your camping requirements if you want to experience camping in high altitudes. Alternatively, our teahouse trek is also equally popular.

Guides for the Trekking.

Guides need to be professionally trained and nurtured. The Trekking trail is a high-altitude traverse demanding multiple days above 4000 meters. You will need a technically knowledgeable trekking guide who is licensed. In emergencies, a trekking guide will assist you with any help that can be summoned. As of April 2023, trekking principles are mandatory for all treks in Nepal. Having a trekking guide accompany you during the traverse would be best. Hence, trekking solo to Kanchenjunga is not possible for now.

Boundless Adventures stands as a veteran trekking company in Nepal. We have been operating high-altitude trekking for over 2 decades now. Our ground crew, including our trekking guides, are trained professionally. They are locals of your trekking region and thoroughly know the terrain. Please inquire with us to learn more.

Best Season in Kanchanjunga Trek

4 different weather patterns consist of Nepal’s climate. Spring, Autumn, Winter, and Summer are the significant seasons in Nepal. As with most of the treks in Nepal, Kanchenjunga Trekking’s best time is during Spring and Autumn. Spring months begin in March and last till the end of May. Autumn occurs in September and lasts till November. These times are the best for the weather window they provide, which ultimately reveals the Himalayan jewels. Alternative optional dates can be arranged for winter and summer trekking. Please inquire with us to know more.

Trekking Permits Kanchenjunga

Kanchenjunga Permits are of two different kinds. Firstly, the area enclosing Kanchenjunga is one of the restricted areas in Nepal. You will require a restricted area permit for the Kanchenjunga region. Another is the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area permit (KCAP), which gives you access to the area. Kanchenjunga Restricted Area Permit(KRAP) costs $80 per person for the first four weeks. After that, the cost is US$25 per person per week. KCAP costs NPR.2000 (Approx US $20) as a one-time access fee.

Water Bodies in the Kanchenjunga Region

Despite being landlocked, Nepal includes about 70% of the water mass. These include rivers, lakes, streams, and ponds. The majority of these water bodies originate from the Himalayan peaks.
The snow that melts from these Himalayan peaks turns into glacial deposits at the bottom of the mountains. These glaciers then turn into water form, which creates the Himalayan rivers. Kanchenjunga mountain range is the originating point for several water bodies.

Tamur and Ghunsa river systems are two major rivers from these mountain ranges. Both these rivers are tributaries of the Saptakoshi river system. Also, Zongla Tsho is a pristine glacial lake at 4600 meters above sea level.
Another highlight of this region is the Lapsang waterfall, which you will see during your Trek to Kanchenjunga Base Camp.
