Nepal cultural tours

Nepal is a multi-racial, multi-lingual, and multi-religious country. People of many ethnic groups and communities live in peace and harmony, following and enjoying their own culture and tradition. The people of Nepal have followed their own culture and traditions since around the 13th century. Different ethnic groups have different culture and tradition that includes languages, dresses, festivals, dances and music. Although there are many sub-divisions, the majority of the culture of Nepal is divided based on geography; low-land, mid-land and high-land.

Low-Land: The base of the low-land is 70 to 300 meters high from the sea. It is also called the Terai region and is located at the southern border of Nepal. The communities residing in the region are Tharu, Thakur, Mahat, Madhesi, and Raya. Each community follows it"s own principles and lifestyle. Chhath parba, Udhauli-Ubhauli and Holi are some of the important festivals celebrated by people in this region. 80% of the population are Muslim. Most of the people depend on agriculture as their main occupation, while some of them are involved in fishing, trading, animal husbandry and industry labor. Fertile soil and favorable weather make the Terai region a perfect place for farming and thus, most people depend on it. It has diverse wildlife providing habitat for some rare species such as one-horned rhino, Bengal tigers, birds and butterflies.

Mid-Land: The Middle land ranges from 300 meters up to a height of 3000 meters. It is called the Hilly region as most of the part is cover with hills and cliffs. All the people of the ethnic group Brahmin, Chhetri, Vaisha and Sudra live in this part of the country, each of them living together, yet following their own culture and tradition. They speak their own languages and celebrates their own festivals and ceremonies. The profession of the majority of people residing in this region is agriculture, animal husbandry, business and weaving handicrafts. People of this region celebrate festivals like Dashain, Tihar, Indrajatra, Lhosar, Maaghe Sankranti, etc.

High-Land: High-land is located over 3000 meters to 4200 meters. It is the Himalayan region and lies at the northern border of the country. Although, such a highland region covers a vast area, the population of human settlement is too low because most of the land in these regions are uncultivable. A very limited and single pattern crops such as buckwheat, potato, barley and radish can be cultivated due to the geographical structure and extreme cold climatic condition of this region. Mostly, Tibetan origin people like Sherpas, Thakali, Langtang, Lopas, and Shyars, who follow Tibetan Buddhism, live in this region. They celebrate festivals such as Lhosar, Tiji, Yarthung and Mitha during different times of the year. People are involved in different economical aspects to support their livelihood. Trekking, mountaineering, operating hotels and guest house, herding and caravan trading are some of the professions of people living in this region.
