Bullfighting is another ancient Nepalese festivals that have been observed according to the lunar cycle of the Hindu calendar. It is also known as Maghe Sankranti or festival observed on the first date of Magh in the Vikram Sambat (B.S) calendar (about 15 January most of the time). Maghe Sankranti is a harvest festival, the beginning of a new agricultural season, and the time when days start getting longer and warmer. The date is also related to the movement of the signs of the zodiac, as determined in Nepali tradition.

On the day of Makar Sankranti, many Hindus worship the sun god, take ritual baths in holy rivers, sharing special foods like yams, laddus (sweet dough balls), ghee, sweet potatoes and get together with relative members and family. People belonging to lo-land region Magar, and Tharu communities are celebrating Maghi Sankranti festival as a “New Year”. Magar and Tharu groups organized various programmers and festivals showcasing their culture and dance in Kathmandu, Tudikhel Ground including various parts of the country like; Chitwan, Nawalparasi and Bardibas. The day of Maghe Sankranti, Tharu community demonstrate the special dance-like; Maghauta, Jhumara, Lathi, Hurdangwa, Mahutiya, along with food festival and cultural shows to welcome their new year.

Where, Members of the Magar community take out a rally to celebrate the Maghe Sankranti festival as New year and participated in a cultural and traditional dance in Annapurna area like; Kauda, Salaijo, and Ghatu. In lowland region of Nepal, Every people take Maghe Sankranti as the main festival. Early morning people take a bath in the holy river. Rivers like Devghat, Dolalghat, Baraha Kshetra, Ride (Kaligandaki Rivers), The Sachi Tirtha at Trivenighat Rivers are famous for taking a bath with spiritual purpose during the Maghe festival. It is also believed that if you take a bath in Holy River during the festival, all the Sins will remove from your life which you had done. Many devote from country ward like; India comes here for a holy dip. People of Terai region are more likely to celebrate Makar Sankranti as a grace of happiness and cheerfulness.

Maghe Sankranti is significantly celebrated in Mountain and the Himalayan region as well. During the day of Maghe Sankranti festival, people of the Himalayan region conducts the Bullfight program in various part of the mountains region. Some of the areas like Taruka, Betrawati and Ghale Bhanjyang of Nuwakot district is a very popular place for Bullfighting since more than 13 years ago. Although, several different places in the district used to organize bullfights in their own way by the local community.

What is the location of bullfighting area in Nepal?

It is the north-east drive from Kathmandu to Nuwakot district located 75 km. it takes 3-4 hours drive by bus. Throughout the trip, you will find a smooth environment with high hills and green forest of Shivapuri Conservation Areas. Along the way to Langtang trekking area. Many rare species are noticed with melodious sound of birds during your tour to Nuwakot, bullfighting areas. You can observe plenty of well-cultivated land with agriculture products along with Trisuli and Tadee bank of river flow. Where is the Tharu culture program in Nepal?

Tharu cultures are the native people of Nepalese society. This is 5/6 hours west drive by tourist comfortable bus from Kathmandu, The buses go early morning every day from Kathmandu.  Mostly Tharu communities use to live ina lo-land region of Nepal like;  Parsa, Nawalparasi, and Bardibas districts of Nepal. Whereas, Chitwan National Park is the Homeland of the Tharu people who are the original people of this region. They have their own language, culture, and traditional beliefs. During this trip, you learn about the local Tharu people, culture, tradition, religion, and heritage. You will visit the village by oxcart, jeep or privet vehicle whatever the possibility and walk through the village in the morning or evening. You will also know about traditional Tharu stick dances at the cultural and festival tour. These are cultural and traditional dances with long and short sticks performed by local Tharu people. Where are the Magar communities are used to leave in Nepal?

Magar community’s people use to live in Annapurna and Dhaulagiri region of Nepal. we need to go by bus or by plane to Pokhara from Kathmandu. It takes 20 minutes by flight from Kathmandu airport and 5/6 hours by Tourist Bus to Pokhara and couple of days hiking, Whereas, Ghorepani, Shikha and Ghara are a major place for Magar communities are used to live. Magar communities member is also rich in the cultural and traditional background. They celebrate their festival with their own communities together and sharing happiness along with relative and family. Ghatu nach is most popular cultural dance of Magar communities. They are engaging in the agricultural sector as well. They are still depending on arranging the marriage with their community only.
