The Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve is one of the renowned wildlife reserve of Nepal, It is known for the richness in the bio-diversity and natural environment. As it’s home to many endangered animals as well as bird species. 23 % of the total land is covered to protect all the endangered species in which there are national parks, wildlife reserves, conservation areas, hunting reserve areas in number 9, 3, 6, 1 respectively. Because of the severities of bio-diversity it is also one of the tourist destinations known in the world. There is a good balancing nature in the parks and wildlife areas that’s why the rare species not found around the world is found here. March, April, may, September, October and November of 2016, 2017, 2018 are the best season of Koshi Tapu wildlife Reserve.
The Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve is the protected area located in Saptari, Sunsari and Udayapur in Eastern Nepal. The wildlife reserve covers vast area of Koshi River with blue waters and lush jungle areas on either side which is the major attractive element of the reserve. It covers the area of 175sq. Km in the lowland Terai. In 2oo5 both reserve and Koshi Barrage together was known as one of the 27 important bird areas of Nepal. Koshi Tappu Reserve is the home land to 200 species of fish, wild buffalos, hog deer, wild boar, spotted deer, blue bell, jackals, Asian elephant, and wild pig, smooth-coated and golden jackal. In the sight of the Koshi River Ganges river dolphin, 2 toad species, 9 frog species, 6 lizard species, 4 snake species, 11 turtle species and also gharial and mugger crocodile are also recorded.
You will also be mesmerized by the colourful birds; watercpck, Indian Nightjar, dusky eagle owl, black headed Stonechat, striated grass bird, large adjutant stork, Pallas’s fish eagle, common golden eye and gull billed tern are also there. The vegetation of Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve is a mixture of deciduous riverine forest, grasslands and marshy vegetation.
Riding in the back of an elephant or riding the jeep, the way you are comfortable, whole reserve can be explored. The delightful birds found in Koshi River make it more picturesque. If you want to enjoy nature in complete way, then Jan-May and Sept-November is the best time to visit Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve.
